Looking for an easy toddler activity that works any time of year? This egg dyeing sensory play idea is simple, fun, and perfect for indoor or outdoor play—not just Easter.
Something I do with my little one throughout the year, is coloring Easter eggs. I don't stick to only one time of year for this fun, inexpensive activity. This particular day my littlest love was clearly bored to pieces, so out came the dyes and glitter. (I happened to have a dye kit on hand)
Dollar Tree often has egg dye. Or you can buy online at Amazon, Target or the like. You can also make your own dyes using just food coloring and white vinegar.
Eggs are pretty cheap by the dozen at Dollar General. I paid a little over $2 for a dozen. Wal-Mart has them pretty cheap as well.
So if you're ever stuck inside with a child who's in desperate need of something to do, this one is a pretty easy win.
Why toddlers love this activity:
sensory play (colors, water, textures)
fine motor practice (dropping eggs, stirring dye)
focus + calm activity
Expect colorful hands and clothes, and a happy baby :)
Directions for homemade dye
Boil dozen eggs for 11mins, drain and stick in cold water immediately.
Boil more water (make sure you have bowls /cups for each different color)
Add a tbsp or so of vinegar to each bowl
Pour boiling water in to each bowl
Add food coloring to each bowl, more for vibrant colors, less for softer colors.
Then stir until dye is fully mixed.
Dye your eggs and put back into egg carton to dry.
Can add stickers, glitter or anything you have on hand.
